I was stressed bad because I'm a video editor and I had very important client files on this array. Fortunately I had a Disk Warrior disk that I had bought about a year ago and never used, but it saved me this time! Thanks to Disk Warrior, I didn't lose anything! It's a shame that their filesystems are so fragile, but that's probably why they're ramping up with ZFS. Still, today Mac OS X costs $129 for the base OS, plus $109 for the working version of fsck. :) A friend of mine explained that Apple doesn't want to be in the business of dealing with disks that are hosed. Boo-hoo, poor Apple. I noticed on the Leopard install that you can chose to re-install copying settings from a Time-Machine backup. That sounds like a reasonable middle ground anyhow.
